It turns out, this timeless symbol carries a story that runs deep — rooted in medicine, craftsmanship, and tradition.

Where It All Began: Barbers as Surgeons

The barber pole’s history dates back to medieval Europe, when barbers weren’t just cutting hair — they were also performing minor surgeries, tooth extractions, and even bloodletting.

Back then, barbers were known as “barber-surgeons.” The red on the pole symbolized blood, the white represented bandages, and the blue was later added — in the United States — to reflect American patriotism and, in some interpretations, veins.

Outside old-world shops, a real wooden pole was used for patients to grip during bloodletting. The bandages would be hung out to dry, twisting around the pole in the wind — creating the very image we recognize today.
